The Director-General Since 1 April 2020, Kerstin Jorna is the Director-General of the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. Immediately prior to her current role, she was Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General (DG) for Economic and Financial Affairs. Within the European Union, directorates-general are departments of the European Union government with specific zones of responsibility, the equivalent of ministries at a national level. Most are headed by a European Commissioner , responsible for the general direction of the directorate-general, and a Director-General, responsible for the management of day-to-day affairs The Directors-General are in charge of management and development of services, or policy areas of the various Council configurations. They ensure that the work of the Council is conducted in a manner that is efficient, coherent, and consistent with the overall objectives of the EU. They also provide policy and procedural advice as well as practical New Director-General in the Council’s General Secretariat. Today, the Council appointed Mr Peter Javorčík as the new Director-General for Transport, Energy, Environment and Education (DG TREE). Mr Javorčík will take up his new duties on 1 October 2020.
